Anthony Giddens starts his lecture by explaining his increasing interest in the interface between sociology and politics, and the problems of managing social and political issues In society today. He argues that historically the welfare state stepped in after problems

developed, a negative system, whereas today we need a different kind of welfare system
that acts in a positive way to prevent social problems. Anthony Giddens analysis covers a
wide range of issues from anti-social behaviour, through eating disorders to environmental changes.

Resources Editor Comments: This is a stimulating presentation and discussion suitable for
second year students, particularly those studying politics and welfare. It is also an excellent
up-dating resource for teachers.

Eileen Barker starts her lecture by arguing that secularisation is now an inadequate concept
with which to describe contemporary religion, and that she prefers diversification. She discusses
the affects of globalisation, the mass media and the internet on religion, and the range and
changing nature of new religious movements. While emphasising the continuing importance
of traditional religion Eileen Barker discusses research into the people and ideas that characterise
the new alternatives.

Resources Editor Comments:
This is an excellent resource that ought to be compulsory
viewing for students studying the sociology of religion. It is an up to date discussion of religion
today that is accessible to all students.
